The MGA was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955 as a replacement for the pre-war MG TF Midget. The design of the MGA dates back to 1951 when MG designer Syd Enever made a streamlined body for George Philips' MG TD, which he wanted to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The problem with the TD was the driver's high seating position, because the narrow chassis of the TF did not allow for a deeper seat. A new chassis was designed where the floor was attached to the underside of the frame. This made it possible to realize a much more aerodynamic design. The MGA roadster was built without exterior door handles in favor of aerodynamics and weight. The new BMC B-series engine, which allowed for a lower bonnet, also contributed to the aerodynamic improvements. This engine was initially a 1489 cc 4-cylinder engine with 2 SU H4 carburetors that first produced 68 and later 72 HP. The 1622 cc 4-cylinder engine that was added, had also 2 SU carburetors, but now had 94 hp. Both engines were mated to a four-speed manual gearbox.
The 1600 Mk II is the second series of the 1600. This Mk II had to fulfill the desire for a more luxurious appearance. The model received a different grille, a vinyl-covered dashboard, different rear lights, two-point seat belts, and Mk II type designations.
The MGA 1600 Mk II at Classic Park is a fully restored example. Paint, leather, engine and soft top are in excellent condition. A complete photo report of the restoration is included with the car.
