History of the SeriesThe top model of the SL series W 113 produced 170 hp from its 2.8 l displacement. As the successor to the 190 SL series, it fulfilled the wishes of many customers for more power and comfort. Due to the smooth running of the large in-line six-cylinder engine, the Pagoda also offered exceptionally good cruising qualities, making it a pleasant companion on rallies & trips. The safety measures, which were new and trend-setting for the time, ensure a relaxed feeling. These included a defused interior without corners and edges, seat belts as special equipment and defined crumple zones. The designation pagoda was given to it by the vernacular, as the concave roof resembles temples from the Far East - pagodas, in fact. Yet the shape was originally intended rationally as an improvement in the amount of space available.
