The Volvo Amazon is a real jack-of-all-trades. Pleasant handling, reliable technology, practical in use and always evokes a positive reaction makes it a very desirable classic. In addition, it is also a very safe car for its time and therefore a very popular classic with those who like to use their car on a more regular base. 1956 introduced Swedish saloon basks in eternal popularity and our 123 GT is no exception.
This 1967 Amazon 123 GT spent most of its life in its country of origin, Sweden. There the car was meticulously serviced and maintained. A few years ago the three-door family car arrived in the Netherlands, where the good care it rightly deserves continued. All servicing and maintenance was put in hands of specialists, it was carefully driven, and so the car has remained very trim.
The 123 GT’s bodywork is in rude health with few blemishes. These imperfections are hardly noticeable but are mentioned here to avoid the impression this car is in a concourse state of presentation. Overall it is obvious there are no concerns about the bodywork with no evidence of corrosion, very neat welds and wheel arches and every attachment nice and fresh. The panel alignment is as you would expect from a Volvo, neat and solid.
Inside the neat cabin space, some light patina has developed. The characteristic half colour-coded dashboard is in excellent shape and is naturally immediately recognisable as a 123 GT with its integrated rev counter to the right of the horizontally styled instrument cluster. As it is a Volvo we do not need to emphasise the fact everything is in correct working order. The good condition of the car’s carpets, door panels, headlining and rear bench are all in keeping with the rest of the car’s state.
Mechanical wise this car is probably very interesting for lovers of the 123 GT. This 1967 Amazon is one of the 123 GT’s introduction year. This model stands out because of the high-compression B18B engine, the M41 gearbox, fully adjustable seats, fog lights, the aforementioned rev counter and a few other subtle modifications. The car, as it is, drives perfectly, with a smooth running engine, slick 4-speed overdrive gearbox and very solid feeling suspension. Steering and braking are a pleasure and both feel solid.
All in all a very healthy Amazon in the most popular guise and in fetching livery. The perfect Volvo for someone to enjoy without the worry of having to do a lot to bring this Amazon up to scratch.
