When did you last clap your eyes on a Fiat X1/9? It must have been some ago as they have become rather scarce lately. Especially if we are talking about one in this kind of condition. Let's start at the beginning. The Fiat “Iksu-nono-veh” first arrived in 1972. The car produced 75PS and weighed only 880 kg. A lot of the mechanics was based on its predecessor the Fiat 850 Spyder. Box and block are the same except for the extended 4th gear. Despite its modest power that extended 4th gear allowed this Fiat to reach speeds of up to 170 km/hr. The smooth design by Marcello Gandini of Studio Bertone certainly also help the X1/9 on its way.
We have here a car that was fully restored and overhauled in the past. The car is still in great shape. The bodywork looks really fine. The nice and thin panelwork is correctly aligned. All fibreglass elements are also in good condition. The paintwork was expertly applied and except for some minor wear is in very good condition. The appealing dashboard houses switches, controls and gauges that are all in good working order.
The engine is seated right behind the driver and emits a fine exhaust note. Thanks to its good weight distribution the Fiat X1/9 handles like a proper sports car. The 4-speed gearbox is precise and it is a joy to shift through the gears. Both suspension and brakes contribute in no mean way to this quirky Italian sports car’s handling and are in good condition. The car comes with a photo series of the restoration and a Haynes workplace manual.
