The Volkswagen Safari or Volkswagen Type 181, popularly known also in Germany as the Kurierwagen, in the United Kingdom as Trekker, in the United States as The thing, and in Mexico as Safari, is a military vehicle produced by Volkswagen from 1968 to 1980. It is based partly on the Volkswagen Sedan and based on the platform of the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia type 14 and certain parts of the Volkswagen Transporter of the time, in the 1968 to 1973 models.
The type 181 was conceived to use a rear engine, the chassis is the same as that of the Karmann Ghia, which in turn was based on the Volkswagen Sedan, the transmission and rear axle were taken from the first generation Volkswagen Combi with slight modifications. The engine used was the air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer, the steering system and the fuel tank were taken from the Volkswagen Sedan. All this resulted in a car which, although more capable of climbing steep slopes, had moderate fuel consumption.
